Andrew is a graduate of Cambridge University and a former British diplomat with postings in Addis Ababa, Jakarta, and Kuala Lumpur. Andrew also had a period on secondment to the Cabinet Office. In 2001, he set up Andrew Barber and Associates (AB&A) a highly regarded boutique corporate intelligence consultancy in Kuala Lumpur, which has since grown into BM&A.
Andrew is the author of a number of books on colonial and wartime Malaya and is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He is a guest lecturer on Cunard World Voyages. He speaks Indonesian, Ethiopian (rusty) and Malay. Andrew is married with two daughters.
Jack co-founded BM&A in 2012. Prior to this, he established an emerging market consultancy with a focus on Vietnam and Myanmar which merged into BM&A. In his role as CEO, Jack oversees BM&A’s projects across Southeast Asia, including due diligence, political risk summaries, intellectual property assignments, threat assessments and evacuation procedures. Jack acts as a crisis responder and has responded to crises in Asia and Africa in the past three years. Jack currently sits on AMCham Myanmar’s OSAC security committee.
Jack holds a BA in International Relations and a MSc in Risk, Crisis and Disaster management, both from UK universities. He speaks Spanish, French, Malay and basic Indonesian. Jack is married with one son.
Ian joined BM&A as a director and shareholder in 2020. Previously, Ian co-founded Blackpeak, a leading risk consultancy business that grew to over 70 staff prior to being acquired in early 2019.
Ian is an investment professional with over 30 years of experience across asset classes and has managed portfolios in the UK, the Philippines and Vietnam. Ian has also worked at Artradis in Singapore, Asia’s then largest hedge fund during the global financial crisis in 2008.
Today Ian serves on several boards as a non-executive director having completed the FT INED Diploma in 2015. He enjoys nurturing management to seek out opportunities for profitable and sustainable growth. Ian holds a BSc in Economics from Swansea University and is married with two children. Ian holds a Singapore PI license.
Terence joined BM&A in 2020 and is a project manager based in our Singapore office. Prior to joining BM&A, Terence worked for a multinational online travel agency’s public affairs team and has also interned at a regional government affairs firm.
Terence graduated from Yale-NUS College, a collaboration between Yale University and the National University of Singapore, where he also served as the editor of the student paper. Terence speaks Malay, Mandarin, and conversational Cantonese.
Kaberi joined BM&A in 2020 and is a project manager based in our Kuala Lumpur office. Prior to BM&A, Kaberi worked for more than two years in Corporate Affairs for Heineken in their operating companies in Malaysia and Cambodia. She previously worked as an account executive at a Malaysian-based advertising company.
Kaberi studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, where she gained a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Social Anthropology. During this time, she was a member of the SOAS Debate Union and editor of the SOAS law bundle. Kaberi speaks basic Malay. Outside of work, Kaberi has been an ambassador for the Women’s Aid Organisation in Malaysia since August 2021.
Elesin joined BM&A as an intern in 2021 and has since become a full-time analyst in our Singapore office. Prior to joining BM&A, Elesin interned at OCBC Bank.
Elesin graduated with a Global Affairs degree from Yale-NUS College, a liberal arts institution in Singapore. Elesin is fluent in English and Mandarin.
Benjamin joined BM&A in 2013 and is an analyst in our Kuala Lumpur office. Prior to joining BM&A, Benjamin worked as a sales promoter and in market entry. Benjamin specialises in conducting in depth research in Malaysia and Indonesia and the nexus between business and politics.
Benjamin holds an Advanced Diploma in Business Studies (Business Economics) from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College. Benjamin is active in a KL-based opera choir and his performances have been enjoyed by members of the BM&A team over the years. Benjamin speaks Malay and Cantonese and reads Indonesian to a proficient level.
Huong has worked with the company since 2005 and became a full time member of staff in 2014. Huong manages BM&A’s projects in Vietnam and Laos. Huong has over twenty years’ experience in healthcare and security risk management. Prior to joining BM&A, Huong worked for International SOS Vietnam as a Compliance and Public Relations Manager.
Huong holds a bachelor’s degree in Law from Ho Chi Minh City University of Law and bachelor’s degree in English from University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS).
Michelle joined BM&A as Singapore office manager in August 2021.
Prior to joining BM&A, Michelle worked for more than two years at a leading macroeconomics research firm where she focused on providing financial, HR and management support. She previously worked in the hospitality and research industries in an accounts payable function. Michelle holds a Bachelor in Business (Management) from RMIT University. She is fluent in English and Mandarin.
Kuah Yi Waey joined BM&A as an analyst in 2021 and is currently based in Kuala Lumpur. Prior to joining BM&A, Waey worked for more than three years the project management team in a large multinational tech firm. She previously worked as the Senior Key Account at a Malaysia-based event company.
Waey graduated from Sunway University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Studies. She speaks fluent English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Bahasa Malaysia.
George joined BM&A in 2017 and is market access analyst based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Prior to joining BM&A, George worked for a fine art auction house in the UK, working closely with growing Asian market and developing extensive contacts across China and the wider Asian region. George also spent two years as a researcher for a senior UK politician.
George graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of Leeds in 2008, where his dissertation focused on Malaysia's political system. He is also a certified marketer with the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
